The mission of Brooklyn College's sustainability initiative is to create an overarching culture of sustainability throughout the entire campus community by raising awareness of, engagement in and commitment to reducing our carbon footprint through campus-based education, research, operations, community-based collaboration, and service. However, the Urban Sustainability (Concentration in Environmental Science) major includes a course (BIOL 1001) that also satisfies a Pathways requirement. Therefore, students majoring in Urban Sustainability (Concentration in Environmental Science) only need to complete 39 additional Pathways credits. Brooklyn College Urban Sustainability has 111 members Brooklyn College student Galilea Matias’ study of water quality in Mexico’s poorer neighborhoods spurred her to consider further research in sustainability and gained her a job with a local CSA helping to improve nutrition in New York City neighborhoods with less access to fresh farm produce. To respond to the increasing demand for a workforce equipped to meet the sustainability challenges of the 21st century, City College of New York offers the Sustainability in the Urban Environment graduate program.
